Gascogne and Rennes — Earth and Fire

After Bugarach, Merona's path bends west — into Gascogne.

Gascony. The ancient heartland of southwestern France, where the Pyrenees fade into rolling plains and the great pilgrim roads to Santiago de Compostela cross and converge. For centuries, this was sacred walking country — a landscape of chapels, wayside shrines, and standing stones left by people who understood that certain paths across the earth carried something more than just direction.

I placed Merona's Earth mastery here deliberately. Gascony is where the pilgrim roads run through the land like rivers — and Lincoln's research connects those sacred roads directly to the pentagram geometry of the Languedoc. The pilgrims were walking the pattern, even when they didn't know it.

Earth mastery in Gascogne

Chapter 15 of Labyrinth of Shadows is brutal. Merona, Murdach, and the Morrigan push through Gascony through months of punishing weather to face one of Armaeus' most devastating attacks. It is here, in the crucible of battle, that the earth responds to Merona for the first time as something alive — not terrain, but ally.

The spell she casts is Gaelic:

"Glaoim ar an talamh, ar anamacha an domhain, ar mo thiarnas!"

I call upon the earth, upon the souls of the world, upon my lordship!

Gascony does not give up its secrets easily. Neither does Merona.

Then: Rennes

From Gascony, the path turns east — back into the Languedoc, back toward the heart of Lincoln's pentagram: Rennes-le-Chateau.

In the fifth century, when Merona walked there, it was not yet the tourist destination it would become. It was simply a sacred site — a high place in the Razes, dense with old power and older memory.

Merona arrives at Rennes in a storm. Armaeus is waiting. And it is here, surrounded by hellfire and desperation, that she masters the element of Fire.

"Bride, tine agus beatha, tabhair an chumhacht dom an lasair a rialu!"

Brigid, of fire and life, grant me the power to command the flames!

She does not merely control the fire. She becomes it.

That realization — at Rennes-le-Chateau, at one of Lincoln's five pentagram points — was not an accident. I placed the fire mastery there because fire is transformation, and Rennes is a place that has been transforming people's understanding of history for a very long time.
