Updated: 17 hours ago

Ancient Gaul during the rule of the Merovingians.
Ancient Gaul and the Merovingian Dynasty

In the early fifth century, the tribal landscape of Europe was forever changed by the invasion of the Huns. This forced the Sicambrian Franks, led by Merovech, to cross the Rhine and establish themselves in Gaul. This migration was not only a quest for safety but also the beginning of a new era for the Merovingians, whose lineage was steeped in mystery and fascination.

Rumors spread about the origins of their mystical powers, with many believing their bloodlines were entwined with ancient magic, an enigma that captured the imagination of all who heard it. Some whispered that their ancestors were fey, hiding deep within the dense forests of Europe, while others traced their lineage back to the legendary Minotaur of Crete, a creature that embodied both fear and grandeur.

Even more unsettling were the chilling stories of the Deep Ones, otherworldly sea creatures whose essence was believed to flow through the veins of the Merovingian kings. This connection granted them supernatural powers that defied the understanding of ordinary mortals. These rulers were far more than mere monarchs. They embodied an ancient wisdom and an unmatched mastery of arcane forces, capable of telepathic communication with creatures from both the earthly and ethereal realms. Their long, flowing hair was not only a symbol of their regal stature but also thought to serve as a conduit for their mystical abilities. To their people, the bees that swarmed around them represented a promise of immortality. As the Western Roman Empire disintegrated, the Merovingians capitalized on the ensuing chaos, expanding their power through brutal and relentless conquests, etching their name into the history of Europe.

However, The Merovingians’ chaotic ambitions were matched by the unraveling of the natural world. A massive earthquake struck the Mediterranean, causing destruction in far-off lands, and civilization seemed to be on the verge of collapse. Unusual events, like unexplained eclipses that plunged entire regions into darkness for years, and disastrous volcanic eruptions, mirrored the turmoil of human fate. Comets, bright and fiery, streaked across the sky, their presence both awe-inspiring and terrifying to those who looked up in fear. Each natural disaster added to the sense of dread hanging over the world, as it seemed that nature itself was turning against humanity, signaling a time of great uncertainty and peril.

In the middle of the turbulent time of despair and change, a witch appeared, her arrival whispered about in prophecies spread across Gaul. She was said to possess mysterious powers predicted by ancient seers, making her a figure surrounded by myth and legend. Many believed she was the chosen savior, destined to lead her people through the dangerous times ahead. However, her arrival did not bring peace. Instead, it unleashed a storm of war and chaos, as her influence began to shift the very course of destiny. As her powers grew, the balance of fate itself seemed to waver, hinting that the era of the Merovingians was not only defined by their conquests but also by the rise of a new force. One powerful enough to challenge even the mightiest of magical bloodlines.

The Witch's Rebirth series by Michaela Riley explores this ancient landscape and brings it to life with her dark fantasy series. The town of Septimania in the south of present day France still exists today.
